Our Functional Medicine Dermatology Approach + 3 Simple Tips to Get Started

Skin issues are not just outwardly discouraging – they also are major signs that our internal health and physiology is under distress.

If you (our your children) has issues like:

Acne that won’t clear, eczema that keeps flaring, rosacea that feels unpredictable, or rashes that show up “out of nowhere”, you don’t just have to suffer.

2026 doesn’t need to be another year of trial-and-error creams and prescriptions.

In functional medicine dermatology, we don’t ask “What will suppress this?”
We ask “Why is the skin reacting in the first place!?”

Your skin is not the problem, but merely a sign that something bigger is happening internally.

Healing your skin in 2026 starts by shifting from a symptom-focused approach to a root-cause strategy. And it doesn’t have to be complicated.

As a functional medicine practitioner, who has been practicing dermatology for over 20 years, here are the best places to start!

First, What Is Our Functional Medicine Dermatology Strategy?

Functional dermatology looks at the whole person, not just the skin’s surface. We evaluate how internal systems, like our gut microbiome, hormones, immune function, nutrient levels, detox pathways, stress, and even your blood sugar, and how they interact and influence the skin.

Instead of experimenting through topical treatments alone, we build a foundation that allows the skin to repair, regulate, and heal the skin, from the inside out.

Our Unique Approach:

1. Functional, Diagnostic Testing

We look at root causes like gut infections, mineral imbalances & metabolic dysfunction, plus a thorough health history intake. We also use specialized testing, like Organic Acids and GI Map, to analyze what is going on & to give YOU the most comprehensive treatment plan.

  1. Cellular Healing

Clear skin starts with the integrity and function of your cells. When your cell membranes are rigid, your mitochondria are stressed, nothing else can function optimally, not your hormones, your gut, or your skin. We focus on deep nourishment to rebuild cellular structure and resilience from the inside out.

3. The Order Of Healing Matters

Jumping straight into “detox” without fixing your foundation first? That’s a recipe for worse breakouts. We heal in layers, and we do it right.

4. Improve All The Body Systems

A sluggish metabolism & poor gut health? This means slow healing, poor detox, and reactive skin. If your body is relying on stress hormones instead of food for fuel, your skin will pay the price.

5. Comprehensive Recommendations

Within our programs, patients receive:

  • A full assessment of your potential inflammation triggers from diet, gut health, lifestyle, stress levels, skincare products and more
  • Personalized diet and nutrition counseling
  • Supplement recommendations
  • Education on clean skincare options
  • Follow up testing for endocrine function, allergies, sensitivities, or nutritional deficiencies

5 Starting Steps to Healing Your Skin in 2026

There ARE things you can do TODAY to help support the health of your skin!

1. Drink More Water:

As simple as this sounds, this is a foundational health habit that many people neglect.

Water has so many health benefits, especially when it comes to your skin health. It helps flush away toxins (hello Christmas cookies) support digestion and reduce inflammation from the inside out – all things necessary for healthy skin.

Many people know they NEED to do it, but they either forget, or they “don’t like the taste”.

Here are my solutions:

Keep a visual reminder: carry your water bottle around with you, and set specific times of day that you benchmark to drink it (i.e. with a meal, when you arrive at work etc)

Add in no sugar electrolytes, that will “flavor” the water but also replenish important minerals!

2. Do a Kitchen Detox

To put it simply: what you eat has a huge impact on your skin.

Our treatment plans are designed to help you clear your skin by healing your gut. Known as our “second brain,” the intestinal microbiome needs a delicate balance to remain healthy.

Overconsumption of inflammatory foods and unidentified allergens throw off this balance, which in turn throws off your entire system.

Get started: That means get rid of the leftover food, desserts and trigger items laying around from the holiday parties! These pro-inflammatory foods only increase irritation to your gut health and can actually lead to skin flare ups. Clean sweep, throw it out, and you won’t miss it.

It might also mean going through your fridge and pantry and assessing the quality of your food products & ingredients.

3. Balance your Blood Sugar

Blood sugar spikes don’t just affect energy and weight. Hormones like insulin and your metabolic health as a whole directly influence skin inflammation, oil production, and hormone signaling.

Unstable blood sugar can worsen conditions like:

  • Acne
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa
  • Psoriasis
  • Ezcema
  • Premature aging

Simple place to start:

  • Build meals around protein, healthy fats, and fiber
  • Avoid eating carbs alone (even “healthy” options)
  • Move your body throughout the day to help utilize the glucose as fuel

    4. Do a 10 min Year Reflection

Before asking, “What goals do I want to achieve in 2026?”
Ask, “What did my body (and any symptoms) try to tell me this year?”

What did I learn from this year – what serves me, what is a trigger or a sabotage to my health?

Your skin, digestion, cognitive function, energy, and more are messengers, and communicating with us all the time.

During this quieter week, reflect on:

      • When your skin flared…and what was happening at that time (or right before)
      • Periods of high stress, poor sleep, or digestive changes
      • Patterns around sugar, alcohol, travel, or emotional overwhelm

      5. Reduce Your Skin’s Inflammatory Load (Inside and Out)

Your skin has a threshold. When internal stress, poor sleep, nutrient deficiencies, toxins, and topical irritants stack up, flares happen.

A simple place to start is to identify any possible environmental irritants.

      This can mean:

      • Doing a literal, clean sweep of your house: opening the windows, dusting, vacuuming etc. It sounds simple (because it is) but a clean environment will only help our whole health!

      It can also mean:

      • Getting rid of triggers like artificial fragrances
      • Conventional skin care and makeup products that are disrupting your hormones and microbiome

What Healing Skin in 2026 Could Look Like

True skin healing isn’t overnight and it’s not linear (unfortunately!). But when you address root causes, patterns start to shift:

      • Flares become less intense
      • Skin recovers faster
      • Breakouts follow logic instead of chaos
      • You feel more in control of your skin

That’s the difference between managing symptoms and creating lasting change.
