Rosacea: Looking Beneath the Surface

Rosacea is often described as a chronic skin condition.

Persistent redness. Flushing. Sensitivity. Breakouts that don’t respond to typical acne treatments. Skin that seems reactive to everything… even when you’re “doing all the right things.”

But it affects people’s lives much more than just how they look.

At Whisper Health, we approach rosacea differently.

Because rosacea is not just a skin issue.

It’s often a reflection of deeper imbalances within the body.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the face. It can also affect the eyes giving a feeling of grit inside the eye.

It can come and go, or gradually become more persistent over time.

Triggers vary from person to person, but often include:

  • Heat or temperature changes
  • Stress
  • Alcohol or certain spicy foods
  • Sun exposure
  • Some Skincare products

While these triggers can worsen symptoms, they are usually not the root cause.

Many people brush off rosacea as “not a big deal” but it actually is a whole-body internal health issue that should be addressed.

Rosacea appears due to underlying inflammation & immune dysregulation, resulting in changes in the skin barrier and microbiome.

The Subtypes of Rosacea

Rosacea can present in different ways. Understanding the subtype helps guide a more personalized approach to how to heal (and how we can help you!)

Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR)

  • Persistent redness
  • Flushing
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Skin may feel warm, stinging, or sensitive

Papulopustular Rosacea

  • Redness with acne-like bumps or pustules
  • Often mistaken for adult acne
  • Inflammation is more pronounced

Phymatous Rosacea

  • Thickened, textured skin
  • Most commonly affects the nose
  • Less common, but more advanced

Ocular Rosacea

  • Dry, irritated, or bloodshot eyes
  • Burning or gritty sensation
  • Often overlooked or misdiagnosed

Many individuals experience a combination of these subtypes.

Why Conventional Approaches Don’t Work Long Term

Traditional dermatologic care typically focuses on managing symptoms.

This may include Topical medications, oral antibiotics, steroids or anti-inflammatory creams. Some skin care can also claim to help the redness and sensitivity.

While these can provide temporary relief, they often do not address why rosacea is happening in the first place.

As you know, here at Whisper Health, we take a root-cause approach to all of your health concerns. Not just what is happening, but WHY and HOW we can resolve it?

  • Rosacea is often connected to:
  • Gut health imbalances which affect the microbiome
  • Chronic inflammation originating in the GI Tract
  • Immune system dysregulation
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Nervous system stress
  • Environmental exposures

Many of these are inter-connected!

For example, poor food choices create imbalanced blood sugar, which is a stress to the nervous system. These foods can also disrupt our gut health, which leads to an increase of inflammation.

The Important Gut Skin Connection

One of the most significant contributors to rosacea is the health of the gut (crazy but yes!)

Research and clinical experience both show connections between rosacea and:

-Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

-Dysbiosis (imbalanced gut bacteria)

-Increased intestinal permeability (also called leaky gut, where the gut lining is weakened)

-Food sensitivities (because of the leaky gut & dysbiosis)

When the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can trigger systemic inflammation that shows up on the skin.

This is why supporting gut health is often a key part of improving rosacea (and other skin issues) we see in the practice.

Our Functional Testing

To understand what’s driving rosacea, we use advanced functional medicine testing when appropriate.

This may include:

  • Comprehensive Stool Testing: Evaluates gut bacteria, pathogens, inflammation, and immune function inside the GI tract.
  • SIBO Breath Testing: Assesses bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine
  • Micronutrient Testing: Evaluates nutrient deficiencies that impact skin health and healing
  • Hormone and Cortisol Testing: Assesses stress response and hormonal balance

Each test is selected based on the individual’s history, symptoms, and clinical picture.

A Personalized Path to Healing

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to rosacea. Your healing protocol may include:

* Targeted nutrition to reduce inflammation and support the gut

* Identifying and removing triggers ie foods, environmental exposures, etc

* Supporting the skin barrier with gentle, appropriate skincare

* Regulating the nervous system and stress response

* Addressing underlying infections or imbalances

Honest truth: Healing doesn’t happen overnight. Because many of these issues have been present for months or years.

But the good news?? When the root causes are addressed, and the plan is comprehensive and holistic, you can have healthy skin (and better health overall)!
