When it comes to mental health issues, especially in kids and teens, we NEED to look beyond symptoms (like anxiety, depression, or ADHD) to uncover underlying imbalances.
As with most health issues, adults and children are given medication as a solution.
But you are not deficient in medication. Your body is lacking something else (or multiple things) and that is why you are having outward symptoms. And yes, medication may help but the underlying drivers still remain, so it’s not solving the problem long term.
When we address YOU as a whole & look at your physiology & lifestyle, THEN we can improve the outcomes but also maintain it without having to rely on medication.
Specifically with ADHD, focus and attention is influenced by neurotransmitters, blood sugar, sleep, nutrient status, stress, inflammation. This is where you start to “unpeel the layers” to support your body & find where the imbalances are occurring.
So…what’s influencing those neurotransmitters in the first place?
Mistake #1: You’re neglecting the gut-brain connection.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The gut and brain are constantly communicating through the gut-brain axis (vagus nerve)
• Around 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut
• Inflammation in the gut can send stress signals to the brain
If you want to improve mental health, then you also need to address your gut health.
What drives that inflammation?
- Gut dysbiosis (imbalanced bacteria)
• Food sensitivities or ultra-processed foods
• Chronic stress
• Environmental triggers
• Nutrient deficiencies (I describe more of this below!)
How this can show up in ADHD:
- Difficulty focusing or staying on task
• Increased impulsivity
• Mood swings or irritability
• Brain fog
• Fatigue that looks like “lack of motivation”
Mistake #2: You’re not prioritizing nutrition or steady blood sugar.
Blood sugar dysregulation can mimic ADHD symptoms (and makes it worse!)
When glucose spikes and crashes throughout the day, the brain feels it first.
That can show up as:
- Trouble focusing or staying present
• Irritability or mood swings
• Energy dips that feel like burnout
• Cravings that make it harder to stay consistent
It is not just about WHAT you eat, but also WHEN.
Skipping meals matters more than most people think.
When meals are delayed or missed:
- Blood sugar drops
• Stress hormones rise
• Focus and patience decrease
So first, avoid high carb, sugary processed foods in your meals, aiming for high protein & fiber rich options. Second, eat consistently to avoid blood sugar drops, being “hangry” and exacerbating any ADHD symptoms.
Mistake #3: You’re nutrient deficient & don’t realize it.
Iron: it helps dopamine production & low ferritin has been linked with worsened ADHD symptoms. Many kids and adults with ADHD are never screened for ferritin (stored iron).
Magnesium: this powerful mineral matters more than you think. It supports calming the nervous system, improves sleep quality & may reduce hyperactivity/restlessness in some people
Zinc: Low zinc has been associated with attention and impulsivity issues. This micronutrient is needed for neurotransmitter function, and it is commonly low in “picky eaters”.
So yes you need to focus on blood sugar & the balance of macronutrients (proteins carbs and fats) but micronutrients (vitamins & minerals) have a huge impact on ADHD as well!
Mistake #4: You have poor sleep hygiene.
Sleep is one of the most overlooked drivers of attention, mood, and behavior.
When sleep is off, the brain doesn’t regulate well.
Focus drops. Impulsivity rises. Emotional resilience shrinks.
In kids especially, overtiredness doesn’t always look like fatigue, but actually look like hyperactivity.
We look at how someone is sleeping:
- Mouth breathing vs. nasal breathing
• Snoring or potential sleep apnea
• Restless or fragmented sleep
• Difficulty falling or staying asleep
These patterns quietly disrupt oxygen flow, nervous system regulation, and brain recovery overnight.
Plus, your night routine & sleep hygiene will affect sleep quality. It’s important we address biological factors but also lifestyle ones like Circadian rhythm, light exposure, room environment and more.
It doesn’t have to be medication OR natural support for ADHD. But we DO need to address these components! An integrated approach often works best long term.
Here are key root causes that I might explore, with my functional medicine lens, regarding mental health:
- Stress and Trauma (including Prenatal)
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can shape long-term brain chemistry and behavior.
- Birth trauma, prenatal stress, or maternal mental health during pregnancy may influence early development.
- Genetic & Epigenetic Factors
- MTHFR gene mutations can impair methylation, which affects detox, mood, and neurotransmitter production (these are more common than you think!)
- Toxin Exposure is a HUGE area I have been learning about through my mentorship and trainings. Children are especially vulnerable to environmental toxins that can disrupt neurological development. These include:
- Heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum) found heavily in products, vaccines, paint
- Pesticides, plastics, flame retardants
- Mold exposure or mycotoxins: a huge undiagnosed factor!
Here are some of the tests I may use:
- Organic acids test (OAT) – gives a broad view of gut, detox, mitochondrial, and neurotransmitter markers.
- GI map / comprehensive stool analysis
- Food sensitivity panels
- Nutrient and mineral analysis
- Heavy metal, mold and/or mycotoxin testing
- Genetic testing for SNPs (e.g., MTHFR)
