The Skin & Metabolism Connection: How Improving Your Metabolic Health Can Transform Your Skin

Think the chips, cookies and other treats only affect your digestion? Think again!

Your skin is a mirror of what you feed your body.

Poor nutrition, high sugar, processed foods, low protein, and missing key nutrients, and even ingredients like dairy and gluten, can drive inflammation, disrupt hormones, weaken your skin barrier, and slow repair.

Furthermore, erratic blood sugar and high insulin (from eating habits listed above) also negatively affect the skin, because it raises cortisol (stress hormone) and can disrupt the gut microbiome (another key player in skin health).

When metabolism is sluggish and insulin levels are consistently high (a sign of insulin resistance), your body shifts into a state of inflammation and poor cellular communication.

Elevated insulin drives increased oil production, hormone imbalances, and inflammatory pathways that can trigger acne, redness, and accelerated aging. At the same time, blood sugar swings damage collagen and elastin through a process called glycation, leading to dullness, wrinkles, and loss of firmness.

The result? Breakouts, dullness, premature aging, eczema flares, and stubborn skin issues that don’t respond to topicals alone.

Healthy skin starts on your plate, not just in your skincare routine.

This is why our functional medicine approach looks at you as a WHOLE, not just what is happening on the surface. It all matters and we want you to be the healthiest you overall!

What surprises most people is that elevated insulin isn’t just about eating too much sugar. From a functional medicine perspective, insulin rises in response to many hidden stressors in the body — not just food.

  1. Chronic stress keeps insulin high.
When you’re under constant stress, your body releases cortisol. Cortisol tells your liver to dump glucose into your bloodstream so you can “handle the threat.” But if that threat is emails, deadlines, and lack of sleep — not a tiger — that extra glucose just sits there. Your pancreas responds by pumping out more insulin. Over time, this trains your body to live in a state of high insulin and poor metabolic flexibility.
  2. Poor sleep disrupts blood sugar control.
Even one night of short or broken sleep can make your cells less responsive to insulin the next day. From a functional lens, sleep is when your hormones reset. Without it, insulin sensitivity drops, cravings rise, and your metabolism shifts into fat-storing mode — all of which show up on your skin as inflammation, puffiness, and breakouts.
  3. Hidden inflammation drives insulin resistance.
Gut issues, food sensitivities, toxin exposure, and chronic infections all create low-grade inflammation. Inflammation blocks insulin’s ability to do its job at the cellular level. So your pancreas produces more and more insulin just to get glucose into the cells — a major reason insulin can be elevated even in people who “eat healthy.”
  4. Under-eating and over-training backfire.
Skipping meals, chronic calorie restriction, or doing too much high-intensity cardio sends your body into survival mode. Blood sugar becomes unstable, cortisol rises, and insulin signaling gets dysregulated. Functional medicine looks at this pattern often in women who are “doing everything right” but still have stubborn fat, fatigue, and skin issues.
  5. Gut imbalances affect insulin more than you think.
Your gut microbes help regulate how you process carbohydrates and fats. Dysbiosis, leaky gut, and poor digestion can impair glucose metabolism and increase systemic inflammation — all of which push insulin higher and skin health lower.

So what do we do from here?

  1. Address your underlying root issues – do you have metabolic dysfunction that is affecting your skin health and more?
  2. Look at your lifestyle and start addressing the components of:
  • Daily Movement
  • Sleep & Circadian Rhythm
  • Stress Resilience
  • Optimal Nutrition & Blood Sugar

Places to Start:

  • Plan out healthy, balanced meals with nutrient dense foods (see below!)
  • Schedule in movement breaks (ideally after eating) but for a total of at least 30 minutes a day
  • Stop scrolling – go to bed earlier and avoid picking up your phone first thing in the morning
  • Recognize your specific triggers of stress (there are many kinds!) and brainstorm how to reduce the load and build up your “resilence” against it

How to Plan a Plate for Optimal Metabolic Health:

  1. Pick Protein First: Adults need an average 30g per meal, so that means a palm size of chicken, turkey eggs (usually at least a quarter of your meal).
  2. Next, Choose your Veggies: these should be close to HALF of your plate! Start with any options you like. Veggies provide macronutrients and fiber, 2 key things your gut (and your skin) need to heal and thrive.
  3. Add Complex Carb: Depending on the person, they usually need about a quarter of their plate from non processed options like potatoes, quinoa, rice etc. Keep in mind gluten/wheat can aggravate many skin issues.
  4. Add in Healthy Fat: fats support hormone production and cellular health, both which are needed for healthy skin!

BONUS:

TOP FOODS for a healthy Metabolism and Skin include those rich in phyto-nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties, such as:

  • Leafy Greens
  • Colorful veggies
  • Berries
  • Wild Caught Fatty fish like salmon
  • Raw sprouted nuts and seeds
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Pasture raised eggs
  • Turmeric, ginger and garlic

It’s simple, but not always easy. And that is why we are here to help!

True skin healing isn’t overnight and it’s not linear (unfortunately!). But when you address root causes, patterns start to shift:

  • Flares become less intense
  • Skin recovers faster
  • Breakouts follow logic instead of chaos
  • You feel more in control of your skin

That’s the difference between managing symptoms and creating lasting change.
